FAQs

Do you only produce Shakespeare plays?

No! emShakes produces classics, classics inspired work, and student written works. Past productions include Faust by Goethe, The Seagull by Anton Chekov, and Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl, along with the student written shows such as Cornflower Blue by Emerson Alumni, Preslee Krout.

How do I join emShakes?

emShakes Theatre Co. accepts new board members on a semester basis, depending which positions open up. We post about open positions and how to apply on our Instagram towards the end of the spring and fall semester. Anyone is welcome to participate in our productions whether or not they are a member.

Do I need to be a theatre major to get involved?

No! Any major is welcome to get involved. Send us an email or sign up for our mailing list to learn about opportunities to work with us — past theater experience is great but not necessary! We are an educational organization and learning on the job is part of process.

How do I pitch to emShakes?

Like most STA organizations, we accept pitches at the end of each semester for the following semester. When pitches are open, forms will be available here and on our Instagram account to fill out with some preliminary information about your pitch. When we have received your form, we will reach out to schedule a short meeting for you to present your pitch to the company board.

How do I audition for an emShakes production?

Our productions typically cast shows from the Student Theater Alliance’s Common Auditions, or “CommonAuds,” held at the beginning of each semester. Students of any major can sign up for a slot and audition for a panel of STA directors. Keep an eye out on our social media for information about the next round of CommonAuds!

What’s a staged reading?

A staged reading is a performance without sets or costumes and with minimal blocking. Actors perform the play reading from their scripts. emShakes typically produces around two staged readings a year. Readings are pitched in the same process as our regular season.
